Saw this thread on another forum so thought it'd nick it!!
Anyway what i was wondering is what people used to collect before 1/6th took over???
I used to collect 1/72nd model kits mainly old FROG, Airfix & Revell. I also used to collect diecast toy minis before my interest waned.
What fell by the wayside for you guys once 1/6th came along???

With me it was 1/35 modern JGSDF and British in the 1970s/80s. I also built 1/72 pre-1960 helicopters and Korean War US aircraft.
I dabbled in 1/8 anime figures and 1/6 movie figures, as well as 90mm fantasy girlies.

When I discovered the "Joy of Six" I realised that they took up less space than dioramas!

I must agree with the compulsive disorder theory, but as long as my bank-account is nicely balanced, there's no need to seek professional help (yet :D )

As a kid I was heavingly into Airfix 1:72 wich later on became Tamiya/Revell/Monogram 1:35 (1:32)
Then left my military fase behind me and started collecting anything from the forties and fifties (still do actually)

Then for some reason caught another nostalgia bug ...,. revisited my youth and spend my surplus cash on Vintage Action Man, Lone Ranger and Big Jim toys and some Scalextric too (mainly because as a kid I couldn't afford most of that stuff.....Action Man was a very expensive line of toys over here)

But the moment I saw my first Dragon/BBI figures I knew I wasn't spending my money wisely.......I really tried to stay away from them(I really did) knowing that a few of these figures would never be enough......but nevertheless got hooked.

So .... sold of most of the Vintage stuff and re-invested. (I may have gone overboard on a few figures, but what the heck :D :D )

Regards

Hans

I know what you mean about going overboard - I don't want to think how much I spend on spares so I can bash figures... too scary

I forgot to say that like every other boy in the 70s I had an Action Man... or rather 4 of them and a Land Rover, Helicopter and Turbocopter.

Never even liked the German uniform for him either. Most of mine were either American or British Paras!

In the Netherlands in the seventies (even more so today) military toys where pretty much frowned upon, so AM was not readily available, but I do remember vividly, eye-balling the Escape to Colditz set on a top shelf of an up-market department store wich was not only physicly but also financially completely out of reach.
(aahh....fond memories.....best stay away from ebay a while :D )

Regards

Hans

Hi,

With me it all started off with the bagged Airfix models, and if I was lucky I saved up for a boxed aircraft model. From that it went to the larger 1/48th scale and then the 1/32nd scale aircraft, then onto the 1/35th scale military vehicles.

I think I had a long gap with nothing model wise for years, and after I got married I got back into the hobby again with 1/24th scale civilian trucks. And about 5 years ago I saw a Dragon figure that a friend bought into work to show me… I was hooked then

Gary

Same over here, knowing myself I first tried to put a lid on collecting by just getting a WWII US Airborne (James Gordon) and a typical Brit (Harry Collins) to represent the Allies that liberated my home town of Eindhoven.
Then I convinced myself I had to have a figure representing the different Allied units that where involved in operation Market Garden.
(so far so good.....)
Things got a bit out of hand when after some in-debt-research I found out that some uniforms and gear wasn't quite accurate.

The trouble started when other theaters of war got in the mix and there suddenly was a need for complete squads.

Sometimes I wish they stop producing figures I really need (eehh ...want) :? untill they do produce 'em that is :)

Hallo!

I grew up in the rise and explosion of plastic models in the late 1950's, 1960's and 1970's starting with Aurora, Revel, and Airfix, followed by the arrival of the Japanese stuff in WWI and WWII planes.
Followed by fine scale modelling of 1/32nd and 1/35th armor in the '70's.
Which led to miniature figure painting in 54mm, 77mm, and 90mm in the late 1970's.

Which led to 1:1 scale in the 1980's through now.

Now, I am new to the 1/6th Community, and am working on my first three WWI figures and trench vignettes- one being a MG 08/15 gunner- hoping to have lurked here long enough to be inspired and motivated, and triply hoping to may be be "good enough" at the bottom by not having forgotten all of those miniature skills from years past even if my paints have all dried up.

Aurora ..... that brings me right back to my toddler years with their line of 1/8 monsters with optional glow in the dark parts :D

To anyone who likes to visit their childhood once in a while (keeps you from growing old and stale) check out this site http://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php?page=132

Enjoy :!:

My collecting and hobby has gone full circle.
About 5 years ago I found this forum and saw the figures. I got caught up in the detail, subjects especially the paras with all their kit. So I purchased a few and over the next few years ended up with about 20 figures. Para's, Waterloo, Zulu, Aliens.
I purchased two figures that were special to me. The Lifeguard and Horse. The Sailor - my dad got me it as a kid as he served in the Navy during ww2.
Then I got interested in Corgi 1/72nd models. Looking at them I realised my efforts as a child were better quality and certainly a lot cheaper to build. So I bought a few kits. I then made some Warhammer figures. That old modelling bug got me again.
So for the last 12 months I've been building 1/72nd aircraft.
I can't do figures anymore. The recession hit, out of work and just can't afford it. Also the subjects are a bit stale.
So now I focus on 1/72nd. For me it was the figures that were forgotten.
I still have a few gems under the bed and scratchbuilding a 1/6th Alien Colonial Marine Recon Trooper from resin parts found a few years ago.

What would get me interested would be some new ideas in 1/6th. Spacemen, First World War, SAS Iranian Siege, Bomber Crew, Harrier Pilot Falklands, Naval Rating WW2.I'm not really a collect everything collector. More a "I like that one" collector.

I'll tell you what Airfix have been bringing out some awesome stuff in 72nd recently. The Canberras are stunning far better than anything the main producers have released in the past. The recent PR XIX & Mk IX Spitfires were great too. And the price point for the quality of the models is really really good.
